Strictly star Max George was previously engaged to actress Michelle Keegan but they failed to make it down the aisle.

The Wanted star - who has joined the line-up for Strictly 2020 - proposed to the actress in 2011, but they split just a year after he popped the question.

They were together for three years, but Max, 31, admitted that by the end of the relationship Michelle wasn't making him happy and he turned to drink.

He blames his boozing for ruining their relationship and it led to their break-up.

Speaking to The Sun, Max explained: "I had a real problem with drinking too much and that was, without doubt, the downfall of our relationship.

"I was drinking more to forget the fact I was with someone who wasn't making me that happy."

There were rumours the romance was blighted by cheating but Max is adamant the gossip wasn't true - insisting neither of them were ready for marriage.

He went on: "Michelle is seen as like Britain's Sweetheart nowadays, I understand it might have looked as if there was something to hide, [but] there was no betrayal in terms of cheating...

"I tried to kid myself it would work out OK, but the moment she said she didn't want to be engaged anymore I know that something was wrong.

"It was a whirlwind. I don't regret it because you shouldn't regret anything you do. You learn."

Michelle went on to date former Towie star Mark Wright in 2013, and they married two years later.

Max later dated American beauty queen Carrie Baker and Ryan Giggs' ex-wife Stacey Giggs.

This week it was confirmed Max is one of the stars to have landed a coveted slot on the 2020 series of Strictly Come Dancing.
