Nearly 250 areas in England have seen a week-on-week rise in Covid-19 cases - despite many having been under strict lockdown conditions for months.

Oldham in Greater Manchester is the country's top coronavirus hotspot, latest Public Health England figures reveal, overtaking Hull.

Oldham - which was unceremoniously placed in Tier 3 before the whole of England was put into lockdown last week - saw 1,757 people test positive in the week to Sunday.

Hull, Blackburn with Darwen and North East Lincolnshire - which make up the five worst affected areas - have all seen a rise in cases.

Areas recording the biggest week-on-week jumps include Scarborough, Melton and Redcar & Cleveland.

Latest data shows 246 of 315 local authority areas have seen week-on-week rises in infections.?

Oldham has the highest rate of coronavirus infections in England

Today the Department of Health confirmed that new coronavirus cases across the UK had soared by 33,470 - the highest daily increase on record.

It comes as mass testing is carried out in Liverpool in a programme the government hopes to replicate across the country.

Yesterday the UK became the fifth nation in the world to pass 50,000 deaths, following the USA, Brazil, India and Mexico.

Today Business Secretary Alok Sharma twice told the nation that the shutdown of pubs, gyms, hairdressers and non-essential shops "will end" on December 2.

Latest data shows Hull has the second highest Covid-19 infection rate in England

It comes despite Boris Johnson previously stopping short of giving a guarantee - and despite a big leap in the number of daily confirmed cases today.

Mr Sharma said today: "We’ve made it very clear that the national restrictions will come to an end on December 2 and then we will move back into the tiering system.

“I think what’s important right now is… we observe the rules, observe the guidance, and do the basics to protect ourselves. Wash your hands, cover your face, maintain social distance.

“And of course, as we get to December 2 the Prime Minister will set out more details.

“But the national restrictions will be coming to an end on December 2.”
