Coronavirus cases are still rising in areas that have been on local lockdown for nearly five weeks, latest data shows.

Parts of West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and East Lancashire were hit with new restrictions on July 30.

But latest infection rates for every local authority in England shows that many are still reporting increases in cases.

The figures, for the seven days to August 30, show rising cases in Oldham, Trafford, Bolton, Bradford, Pendle and Salford - despite all those places being on local lockdown.

Oldham has been the subject of great focus for its high rate of the virus

The lifting of restrictions on social gatherings had to be postponed in Trafford and Bolton, with the latter now having the second highest infection rate in England.

But Oldham and Bradford have consistently been near the top of the national lists for several weeks, but nevertheless are still reporting increases in cases.

The rate, expressed as the number of cases per 100,000 people, for Pendle is the highest in the country, and rose from 58.6 in the week to August 23 to 74.9

Bolton's rate jumped from 18.8 to 69.6, with 200 new cases, with Rossendale in Lancashire in third place, where the rate has increased from 12.6 to 65.8 with 47 new cases.

The local lockdown in parts of the north has been in place since July
Bradford in West Yorkshire continues to report large case numbers

Corby and South Tyneside have emerged as new hotspots with rapidly rising cases.

But Oldham's infection rate rose week-on-week from 58.2 to 63.3, Bradford's from 42.2 to 52.6, Trafford's from 20.6 to 38.8, Rochdale's from 42.7 to 44.1 and Salford's from 27.4 to 37.9.

That is despite the local lockdown measures in place and raises the question if further action might be needed to drive infection rates down.

Bolton had its lifting of lockdown measures cancelled at the last minute
